Living in the Islands has some perks. Swimming, surfing, hiking, eating tropical fruits and fish, basking in the shadow of one of the most massive volcanoes on earth, the fact that you actually LIVE in PARADISE! It's a pretty sweet deal, one that I enjoy daily as I gorge myself on mangoes and massage coconut oil into my sun kissed skin. Oh My! (Think of George Takei's voice as you read that last exclamation).
There are some cons to living in Paradise. For one, we spend a lot of time driving in circles, our Internet is kinda slow and we don't get too many nerdy events (i.e. Star Trek conventions). Thus, Islanders like myself occasionally make it out to the mainland to hit up Vegas, go wine tasting in Sonoma and meet our favorite Klingon at the San Diego ComicCon.
This can get a wee bit expensive, and so my visits to the mainland have become more infrequent. Instead, I've been pigging out on my favorite science fiction shows, and drinking store bought Sonoma wine. Not a terrible deal, and I think I might have been satisfied with my David Hewlett/Riesling Saturdays arrangement if I hadn't stumbled across something AMAZING!
It's called HawaiiCon and it's been going on for the past two years. HawaiiCon is a tropical ComicCon that takes place every September at the Hapuna Beach Prince Resort, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The convention itself is relatively small, yet personal, with guest enjoying the white sands of Hapuna Beach. Former VIP guests of HawaiiCon include Torri Higginson (Stargate Atlantis), Walter Koenig (Star Trek TOS), and Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica). Not too shabby!
I plan to go to my first HawaiiCon this September 10th, and I am looking forward to experiencing its guest panels, cosplay contests, and adventure with the stars packet (apparently you can do something cool, like snorkel with a NerdGod).
