HBO's The Leftovers
I'm not sure if The Leftovers qualifies as a science fiction show, but somehow it seems to fall within the gray area that consumes shows that walk the line of being genre-less. If I had to describe it, I would say it falls in the same category as Lost or Haven. The Leftovers is a brilliant show which airs every Sunday night on HBO. Based on the dark comedy written by John Perrotta, the show examines the human condition during the Rapture. The show is characterized by frustration, immense sorrow, and characters that are melancholy and lost in a world that inexplicably lost a sizable portion of its population. The Leftovers shows how folks try to cope and move on from the day their loved ones vanished, while others, specifically two cults, try to address that immense sadness and helpless ness feeling that those left behind have to deal with. One intriguing aspect of the show is that there is a group of characters that never speak (the Guilty Remnant), meaning that the actors have to rely heavily on conveying a surreal creepiness simply by chain smoking large quantities of cigarettes and deadpanning potential recruits. The main protagonist also brings a level of melancholy and mystery simply because its hard to tell whether or not he is going insane. Check out HBO's The Leftovers on Sundays at 9PM.
