3D Printers: Real Life Science Fiction

"Earl Grey, Hot!" If you are a die hard Star Trek Fan, then you know that these are the words of Captain Jean Luc Picard (Star Trek Next Generation television series). You also know that almost immediately after making this demand for tea, a small, black, box-like device mounted within the star ship's walls, produces a delicious cup of the Captain's favorite beverage, or rather it replicates it using the newfangled technology of the future. Replicators, as they are called in Star Trek, can create anything, from musical instruments to Romulan Ale. Their existence had been relegated to the fantasies of nerds until recently with the advent of 3-D printers. That's right, printers that actually print, or should I say, replicate stuff! I am not even going to pretend that I fully understand the technology behind these printers except that they are going to revolutionize how we think about technology. Here's a video explaining just what and how these 3D printers are stepping out of the science fiction realm and into reality. Enjoy!
