International Science Fiction Films are Deliciously Good

Recently I've been all about international science fiction films. I've literally been going through them on Netflix and other online streaming sites like a fiend! I think that the melding of different cultural values with great story telling, sweet special effects and uniquely beautiful musical scores has created some of the most intriguing and unique science fiction films to date. Here is a short list of foreign films that really speak to the genre. Let me know of any foreign science fiction movies that you think are awesome. Cheers!

4). Painted Skin II (2012). This is actually an epic Chinese fantasy movie (yeah, yeah, I know it's not science fiction, but I fricken love it!) that has been described by critic's as China's Lord of the Rings. Painted Skin II tells the tragic tale of a fox spirit's journey in becoming a human being. The cinematography is AMAZING! You gotta watch it, but be prepared to commit yourself to 120 minutes of Chinese cinematic magic.

3). The Returner (2006). This movie stars Takeshi Kaneshiro (House of Flying Daggers), who plays a streetwise hit man on a mission to help save humanity with the help of a mysterious stranger claiming to be from the year 2084. Great action and interesting story. Oh, and did I mention that I am obsessed with Takeshi Kaneshiro?

2). Troll Hunter (2010). Oh my God, if you haven't watched this Norwegian masterpiece, then you're really missing out. This is the best sci-fi/fantasy mock documentary I have ever seen! And the trolls are GREAT. You gotta check it out.

1). The Host (2006). One of the best South Korean movies ever! I've watched it twice and I have to say it's a fantastic creature/science fiction movie. I can't say too much more without giving too much away, so just watch it, it's really good.

The Host has one of the best creatures ever!
