The Wonders of FanFiction

I am a fairly recent connoisseur of fanfiction. I was introduced to fan generated stories by my sister. At first, I was pretty skeptical. I was unsure if I could possible enjoy the ravings of fan-girls and fan-boys that spend hours creating what if scenarios.

I stayed away from fanfiction, laughed when my sister suggested that I give it a chance, and stubbornly peered at her over my book as she chuckled or sighed in response to the shenanigans of Loki or the steamy interactions between Spock and Uhura.

It was a while before I gave in to my curiosity and finally took the fanfiction plunge. It all happened on a dark and stormy night when I was introduced to a particularly intriguing and sexy Time Lord.

That's right, Dr. Who opened the flood gates for my fanfiction addiction. After watching all of the episodes involving the 10th Doctor (sigh), I casually wandered onto a fanfiction site in search of stories surrounding David Tenant's Time Lord.  My need to understand the character, and to, ok, I won't lie, satisfy a tiny fan-girl crush, did the trick.

I didn't go hard-core in my early exploration of the medium and stayed away from NC-17 sex odysseys (which can be, well, pretty fun). I initially read one shots and subtle, nuanced-filled stories, that really showcased not only the writer's ability to provide readers with an enriching experience, but also provided a deep psychological exploration of what made the Doctor tick.

Needless to say, it was a fantastic experience, and resulted in my consumption of all manners of fanfiction. I read stuff about Daenrys and Loki (yes, mixing fandoms is common), Uhura and Spoke, what happened if Voldermort had won, everything and anything you could possible imagine.

Of course I came across my fair share of crap; stories rife with corny one liners and ill thought out sex scenes. But I also came across beautiful stories of friendship, loss, even love. I read juicy material that would knock your socks off, if that is your sort of thing. I read material that was so rich, so intriguing that I couldn't imagine the writer not producing some amazing original work. I even started writing fanfiction myself, and published my first story fairly recently (click here).

I highly recommend the fanfiction experience. Just ignore the little voice that says that you might be turning into a fan-girl/boy and dive into this quadrant of Nerdom. Check out these sites and let your journey begin. Good luck!
