Graphic Novel Alert: Saga Delivers
It's been a while since I got into a good graphic novel. I believe the last one I delved into was the Walking Dead ( you have to read this series, it's truly fantastic) and that was about a year ago. Recently I've been craving a good graphic novel and so I was tremendously lucky to come across a series entitled Saga which is authored by Brian K. Vaughan (television's Lost) and illustrated by highly noted artist Fiona Staples (North 40). Saga is a quirky, brilliantly written, dark comedy drama, focused on the repercussions of two warriors from warring factions falling in love and abandoning their posts to be parents. Now before you snort and quickly close out of this tab, believe me when I tell you that this isn't some happy go lucky, syrupy comic romance reminiscence of Romeo and Juliet. The series is gritty and follows its protagonists as they travel through a universe populated with tree grown rocket ships, lie detector space cats and severely pissed off, conflicted bounty hunters. Sounds weird? Well it is, yet it is somehow refreshing in the way it melds science fiction and fantasy into the ultimate geek love child. I read the first volume in one sitting, and I am eagerly waiting for the second volume to be released in the next few months. Hopefully, the progression of Saga will remain as intriguing as its horned and winged protagonists. Volume Two will be available July 9, 2013.
